Voting

2024 Election Dates

Important dates to note are:

  • Presidential Primary: Tuesday, March 5, 2024

  • US Senate & US House of Rep. Primary Election: Tuesday, June 18, 2024
  • General Election: Tuesday, November 5, 2024
    • Early In-person Voting starts Friday, Sept. 20, 2024
    • Last day to register to vote is October 15, 2024 (No provisional ballot used when you register by this date)
  • Same day registration is available during the entire early voting period at your Vote Center and, on Election Day, at your precinct. Registering before the election deadline avoids being issued a provisional ballot.

Voting Logistics

Any U.S. Citizen who is a Virginia resident; at least 18 years old or will be at the next general election; not currently declared mentally incompetent by a court of law; not a convicted felon unless a felon with voting rights restored.

Register to Vote

You can register to vote in person, by mail, or online. After you submit your registration, you will receive a voter registration card.

Register by Mail

Download and print a copy of the voter registration form or go to state or local government offices (when applying or re-certifying for Aid to Dependent Children, Food Stamps, WIC, Medicaid, or Rehabilitation Services), Armed forces recruitment offices, public libraries, Virginia Department of Elections office, DMV offices or during Voter Registration drives. If you have questions, call your local registrar.


Register Online

You can register online to vote at the Virginia Department of Elections Citizen Portal.

Here, you can also access your Virginia voter record to view and update your existing registration, apply to vote absentee, and view your polling place, election district, absentee ballot status, and voting history.

Questions can also be directed to your local Voter Registrar.


Voter ID

General elections are every November. Polls are open 6:00 AM to 7:00 PM. Be sure to bring one form of Voter Identification when voting. Valid IDs include:

  • Virginia Driver’s License or DMV issued ID Card
  • Valid Employee ID card, containing a photograph, issued by voter’s employer in the ordinary course of the employer’s business
  • U.S. Military ID
  • Valid student ID from a school of higher education, public or private, located in Virginia
  • Valid student ID with a photograph from a school of higher education, public or private, located in the U.S.
  • Valid student ID issued by a public or private high school in Virginia
  • Valid U.S. passport or passport card
  • Government-issued ID cards from a federal, Virginia, or local political subdivision
  • Voter ID card from the Department of Elections
  • Voter confirmation documents
  • Valid tribal enrollment or other tribal ID issued by one of 11 tribes recognized by the Commonwealth of Virginia
  • Nursing home resident ID – if issued by a governmental facility
  • Current utility bill, bank statement, government check, or paycheck containing the name and address of the voter – not more than 12 months old
  • Any other current government document containing the name and address of the voter
  • Signed ID Confirmation Statement

Voter Protection

The LWV-VA is a member of the  Election Protection 866-OUR-VOTE  which assists voters whose rights have been violated.

Virginia General Assembly

Annual session convenes the 2nd Wednesday in January.
The Assembly is a bicameral legislature with 40 Senate members and 100 House of Delegates members.
