Meet Susan Bivins – Our new LWV-WA President 2022-24

I am excited to be the new President of the Williamsburg Area LWV through June 2024. I was born in Newport News, VA, and attended Ferguson High School and Christopher Newport College of the College of William and Mary. I graduated with a BA in History and went on to attend the University of Tennessee for my law degree. Returning to Newport News I went into private practice for two years. The terrible economy and a friend convinced my husband and I that we should join the Army as part of the Judge Advocate General (JAG) Corps. The rest is history.

We did a tour as Captains at Fort Polk, LA, and then we became civilian attorneys for the Army. We worked at Fort Polk, then Fort George G. Meade, MD, before starting at Fort Eustis in 1989. At Fort Eustis I worked in Administrative Law with specialties in Contracts, Ethics, and Environment. The last ten years of my career was concentrated solely in Contract Law with the contracting command. I have had great jobs with great people, and got to do a lot of traveling. I retired, however, knowing I still wanted to serve the community in some way.

I am a relatively new member of the League, having joined in 2019. I saw a friend holding the League banner at the Women’s March in downtown Williamsburg, and joining an active community group concerned with women’s issues struck a cord with me.

For the next year the League is going to be very busy with the four issues under study. There are currently groups looking at Environmental Justice; Money in Politics; Equity in Education; and Childcare. Our local league will review and comment on all four studies by March 2023.

In January 2023 the General Assembly will be back in session, and so with the Women’s Round Table discussion which track the GA weekly.

February and March will see the return of the Great Decisions program. We are also hosting the state convention in June 2023, and planning for that is already underway. So the next 12 months will make a busy year.

Keep tuned in to the eVOTER for lots of information about these events. I look forward to serving you all.
