The Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act or SAVE Act is a voter bill that requires all Americans to show their passport or birth certificate to register to vote – no other IDs would be acceptable. This will negatively impact millions of citizens.
VOTER SUPPRESSION?
Here’s how the SAVE Act puts your voting rights at risk:
- To Register to Vote or Update your Voter Registation YOU MUST Prove your Citizenship Each Time – AND ONLY IN PERSON: Even if you’re a lifelong voter, if you move across town, change your last name when getting married, or switch parties, you’d have to provide, in person, your passport or birth certificate with your current legal name – in person at your local elections office – just to stay registered.Government-issued driver’s licenses—including REAL IDs—as well as military or tribal IDs do not satisfy the bill’s requirements to prove citizenship.
- Creates Long Lines: Election officials would face impossible workloads, causing confusion and delays.
- No Mail-In Voter Registration: It would stop online voter registration, make it impossible to mail a registration application, and eliminate voter registration drives.
- Sudden Loss of Your Right to Vote – without warning: If outdated records can’t verify your status, you could be purged from the rolls without even knowing it.
- Disenfranchise: These barriers could disenfranchise millions of Americans. There are 146 million Americans without passports and the 69 million American women whose birth certificates no longer match their married names.
- Targets Women's Voting Rights: About 69 million American women do not have a birth certificate carrying their legal name on it. So they could not use a birth certificate to prove citizenship. The SAVE Act does not allow women to use a marriage certificate or change-of-name documentation to prove identity.
The Act passed in the House and now goes to the Senate. The League of Women Voters of the United States asks you to take action to oppose the SAVE Act.
