Observer Report: Colonial Behavioral Health – September 6, 2022

League Observer Report from K. Siracusa

Notes on Colonial Behavioral Health’s monthly Board of Directors meeting, September 6, 2022.

  • CAN – Community Access Network
  • CBH – Colonial Behavioral Health
  • DBHDS – Virginia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services
  • ESH – Eastern State Hospital
  • RDHW – Riverside Doctors’ Hospital Williamsburg
  • SWRMC – Sentara Williamsburg Regional Medical Center
  • WHF – Williamsburg Health Foundation

The Board discussed the three 2022 legislative priorities of Colonial Behavior Health:

Workforce – recruitment, salaries, and retention of professional staff. The Board will seek to expand funding in this area. The goal is to have funding at the same level that DBHDS receives for hospital staff.

Crisis Continuum Expansion – CBH has plans for expanding crisis services for primarily adults. The expansion includes major renovations to a building on the Merrimac campus. More robust 23-hour crisis services would relieve the burden on RDHW and SWRMC emergency rooms and reduce inpatient admissions to psychiatric facilities.

Consolidated Williamsburg Campus – CBH will advocate, as it has for 15 years, for a consolidated Williamsburg-area campus that would use surplus property previously belonging to Eastern State Hospital.
